Favorite Family Recipe Blog Hop





I've partnered with my blogging friends on a recipe blog hop.

I thought I'd share my favorite recipe for Slaw. I call it Coastal Slaw ....of course. 

This recipe originated because I had purchased a bottle of Coconut White Balsamic Vinegar at an olive oil specialty store and was trying to find a way to create new recipes with this new flavor. 

It has since become one of my favorite vinegars. I use it often  with organic flake coconut to flavor many things, including salads.

Coastal Slaw 
1/2 head of cabbage shredded
5 carrots shredded
4 scallions chopped 
1 cup mayo
1 tbl coconut white balsamic vinegar (I bought mine at the Crushed Olive in Babylon Village)
1/4 Cup unsweetened shredded coconut +a pinch for the garnish
Toss all the veggies with the cup of mayo, add vinegar, toss, add coconut , toss, a pinch of sea salt and pepper. Refrigerate until cool.
To serve toss , plate and garnish with the shredded coconut .
Serve inside fish tacos, along with Pulled Pork or BBQ. Certainly with coconut shrimp.

Funtastic Friday 178 and Belt=Hat Organizer

Happy Friday friends. Before we get to partying I have a quick upcycle project for you.
Don't throw out your old belts until you read this. 

While cleaning out a few things I came across a bunch of belts that I really should have been donating. As per usual I asked myself "How can I upcycle this and not throw it out?" Said the hoarder to the belt.  The answer was a hat organizer. Huh? Hang on you'll see.

Here's what you'll need if you want to make a quick hat organizer.




Hot Glue Gun 
Glue Sticks 
Chalk Based Paint 
1 Belt
1 Package of Clothes        Pins


Now I'll be honest with you here . This is actually a belt from a thrift store since I am in NY and needed a hat organizer , so finally that idea in the back of my mind came to fruition.














Using a hot glue gun , I added 6 cloth pins to the length of the belt. Then I painted the whole thing with chalk paint.Hang on the wall and add the hats. Bingo. Easy, simple and cost effective.Can you say? "Organized."







You can make this fancier by using prettier belts and keep a theme going with some embellishments but for me this was about a quick fix to a problem. You can hang it behind a door like I did or inside a door for extra storage. 
I'm sure you can use it to organize other things too, like scarves or a collection of wristlets.

Coffee Filter Starfish


I made a beautiful coffee filter heart for Valentine's Day a few years back and we even teach the class down at the studio every year.
This year I got to thinking about those brown, natural filters and what they could be used for in the crafting arena. Of course, my brain goes nautical, beachy, coastal for ideas .
I think I can make a Starfish like I made the Coffee Filter Heart.

This is one I taught at the studio a while ago.


At this point I have a completed Starfish and yet I feel like it's a failed project. As I move on with the instructions you'll see why.



First , I did a quick sketch of a Starfish on poster board and traced it onto some cardboard and then cut it out.


I was careful to make the Starfish imperfect because I didn't want the finished project to look like a Star.

I  put a hole in the top now, so I didn't have a problem trying to find a spot to punch a hole later. This will be where I add some twine to hang the Starfish.

Next I made a batch of natural coffee filter flowers. (Hold the center of the filter, twist the bottom and help the top form it's natural carnation like shape.) You will probably need 100 pieces or more.

 I begin by hot gluing the flowers around the perimeter of the starfish . Then I fill in the rest. 

In the end, I gave my little Flamenco Starfish a strand of pearls, some seashells  and a sign that I stamped to say "Sea Life ",  all courtesy of my hot glue gun. 





Now, here is the problem. Every time I look at the Starfish I see this .....
.... a Starfish Flamenco Dancer. 
And then I see this.....



 You see what I' saying?  

 In the end, I gave my little Flamenco Starfish a strand of pearls, some seashells  and a sign that I stamped to say "Sea Life ", all courtesy of my hot glue gun. 

 Even though I consider this a fail , I thought it could spark something creative for others. 
If only there were Flamenco Dancing Starfish or maybe there is one, kicking up his heels while I sleep.
