Coastal Slaw

With Labor Day here this weekend , I thought I'd share my favorite recipe for Slaw. I call it Coastal Slaw ....of course. 

This recipe originated because I had purchased a bottle of Coconut White Balsamic Vinegar at an olive oil specialty store and was trying to find a way to create new recipes with this new flavor. 

It has since become one of my favorite vinegar. I use it often  with organic flake coconut to flavor many things, including salads.

Coastal Slaw 
1/2 head of cabbage shredded
5 carrots shredded
4 scallions chopped 
1 cup mayo
1 tbl coconut white balsamic vinegar (I bought mine at the Crushed Olive in Babylon Village)
1/4 Cup unsweetened shredded coconut +a pinch for the garnish
Toss all the veggies with the cup of mayo, add vinegar, toss, add coconut , toss, a pinch of sea salt and pepper. Refrigerate until cool.
To serve toss , plate and garnish with the shredded coconut .
Serve inside fish tacos, along with Pulld Pork or BBQ. Certainly with coconut shrimp.

Coastal Charleston -1 Cemetery , 1 Alligator and A Mausoleum.

I wasn't surprised to have my twenty-one year old daughter ask me to take her to an old spooky cemetery to see some creepy, old head stones of people who had passed long before our time. My daughter fancies herself, part Wednesday Adams and part Lydia Deetz.




 Loveable,though she is intriuged by the gothlike characters and pretty much anything unusual, witch like, related to Salem , haunted etc.
Upon the advice of Google, of course, we headed down to Charleston South Carolina to visit the very old Magnolia Cemetery.   You can check out the cemetery  at this link. http://www.magnoliacemetery.net/ 

Unbeknownst to me, cemetery visits for other than your own famly are wildly popular. Seems to be that more people do it than I could have ever imagined. My friend told me her 90 year old parents always took time to stop in at cemeteries and see the unique head stones. Another friend told me that friends of his will travel to nearby cemeteries to take rubbings of head stones upon request of living family members and then send the rubbings in the mail to the family.There is apparently a website for this too.  BTW...I just searched cemetery rubbings and was amazed to see an endless list of cemetery rubbing supplies. Have to get me some.

Giant old Live Oaks heavily draped with spanish moss tucked along  waterways glistening with alligator eyes lend an inviting charm to just such a place. Possibly haunted, totally creepy and  I'm pretty sure I  saw a vulture, oh my. Who created the set for this place? Tim Burton?

We  were prancing around admiring grave stones and unique birds close to the water's edge when we noticed a pair of eyes staring at us. As we gathered to view our reptile friend he became startled or maybe hungry and thrashed around in the water sending us screaming in terror about the cemetery in three different directions running for our ride that had somehow disappeared. I, however was prepared to escape any attack from the alligator because I had mace ...and a newly acquired insight that alligators can't run after you as fast, if you run in a zigzag, a lesson I had learned earlier that day when it was demonstrated to me by my daughter who wanted to make sure I DID NOT get eaten alive by an alligator.

   We were lucky enough to come across this Pyramid shaped mausoleum perched along the waters edge accessorized with tall and slender palms reminiscent of an enchanted Egyptian setting along the Nile. 

  In addition to all this, the recently discovered and buried crew from the Civil War famous, Hunley submarine  are resting amongst the deceased at  Magnolia .

Rusty parts .....oh yeah.

Thanks to my daughter I have a new hobby ...cemetery rubbing, can't wait to try this,  I can out run an alligator or mace it and I finally had a chance to visit the Pyramids. Totally worth the trip.

Record Cabinet Redo

Driving home from our Michigan road trip I was able to score this vintage record cabinet at a great price

 I  wasn't even sure what the piece was. I considered a buffet  or something for vinyl record storage. After asking around, I was told it was indeed a record cabinet. I think it's a real special piece. 

 Using the Chalk Country Paint line, I created a custom color with Santa's Coal and Pure Pewter. Afterwards, I dry brushed the top with a mixture of Teal Ocean and Pure Pewter to create a slightly more slate looking teal, next I stencilled and then did a few coats of wax.

 Dark colors ...greys , black and browns are not colors I am drawn to for myself personally and so I thought I needed to challenge myself with this color choice.

 Dry brushed rosettes and detail swith Steel Gray and Teal.
 I love the crackle of the wood in this photo.

It has a very vintage, dare I say, Gothic feel to it. I have been told Old Charleston and Mystical New Orleans. Do do do do ****

Sunshine and Freckles

Happy Thursday folks. I had been working on a cute little rocker this week and I'm thrilled with the way she turned out. I used Subshine from the Chalk Country line of paint and then I freckled her with Pure Pewter from the same line.  After she had a rub down with some clear wax I recover her seat and she is complete.

Various yellows and greys along with some blush on the petals help make this a very shabby chic rocker.

 Sunshine- I used 1/4 of a quart to paint this chair . This paint goes a long way .

Really happy I went with the speckle.

Opening new doors and painting them too. How's that for adventure?

As you get to know me and Coastal Bohemian you'll understand how fitting that blog title is for me. It's just like me to metaphorically bust open a new door and then decide "Hey , we should paint this".

Coastal Bohemian opens new doors, and a freshly "Chalk Country" painted one , this month at a studio location at 4811 Hwy 17 Bypass S Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

We are excited to announce that we are representatives for Chalk Country Paint, a line of clay based paints that are used in recreating, upcycling , repurposing home decor and furniture.

We have several events scheduled this month including Beginner's Chalk Country Paint 101, Vision Board /Bucket List Night and a charity paint a piece.

The workshops are set up to show you the versatility and ease of the application of Chalk Country Paint and it’s use on furniture, metal, glass, wood, and fabrics. You will learn different painting techniques and unique styles of finishes with clear and dark wax. In the workshops you will learn  traditional painting , shabby chic , two-color distress, dry brush and color washing technique.  You will work with both the clear and dark waxes to create finishes and effects.


Vision Board/Bucket list night . 
Join us as we manifest our dreams, create our futures, and make a list of things we need to put on our bucket lists by making your own vision board.First  you'll clear your energy with sacred sage and open up your spirit to receive,followed by a creative meditation and then an open discussion about where we see ourselves and the things we really and secretly would like to do.
Next you'll use photos and sayings to create a poster size collage depicting your goals and dreams in all areas of your life or in just one specific area that you are focusing.(Meant to be kept someplace at home for daily viewing)

Coastal Tea

Happy Memorial Day . My thoughts are with those families who have lost loved ones in pursuit of keeping the United States safe from harm, of keeping me and my family safe this day. Thank you .

For those of you hitting the beach, boating or picnicing here's an easy and special treat for a cold refreshing iced tea. 

Coastal Tea

We love homemade iced teas. Our recipe is a big hit and so we thought we'd share it with you.

What you will need

• 1 large pot filled with a gallon of cold water 
• 1/4 cup of dried hibiscus flowers (found in the herb section of many organic markets or in most Spanish markets found as Sorrel)
• 5 green tea bags-more if you like it stronger (cut and remove strings and tabs)
• 1 orange cut into slices or two tangerines or  two clementines cut into slices
• Honey

Simply toss the tea bags, orange slices and dried hibiscus flowers into the pot and bring to a boil and turn the pot off. Leave the tea to steep for a good half hour. Strain and add honey to taste. Chill.

Refreshing and gorgeous red, this bottle of tea is quite alluring.

 Serve at coastal beach parties, bring as a hostess gift wrapped with a jute bow, tuck a bottle  into your beach basket or stash a bottle  on the boat.
