Windley Key Fossil Reef Park #FloridaKeys

Being the little Coastal Bohemian keeps me busy when visiting the shoreline and different coastal regions. We were visiting the Florida Keys and happened upon Windley Key Fossil Reef State Park.

It's totally a nerdy, beach chic, kinda place. 

 Here's the deal, they used this quarry to cut  limestone from the old seabed to construct the railway through the keys. The remains show some amazing examples of marine fossils.


"Limestone is a sedimentary rock, composed mainly of skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral, forams and mollusks. It's major materials are the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate. About 10% of sedimentary rocks are limestones. -Wikipedia"


These are the remains of the old quarry. It's actually a fascinating place to see the levels of seabed that grew on top of one another through the years.

This stone is 6 ft high so you can imagine how tall this fan shaped coral would have been. (I wonder if I could do rubbings???? OMG)

Ask for Helen at the Visitor's Center, she is incredibly knowledgeable and eager to answer your questions. Definitely, worth the stop for any Coastal Bohemian.
