Dollar Store Challenge Featured Posts

We had a great Dollar Store challenge 2 weeks ago and with over 60 bloggers linking their Dollar Store crafts as well. I'd like to highlight a few here.

First, I'd like to showcase Erlene's Patriotic Chair Covers . These are easy , inexpensive, hence the Dollar Store theme and a perfectly colorful way to celebrate Memorial Day , Flag Day, $4th of July or show your patriotic spirit. If you NEED to make them, make sure to click on over and pin the link.

I also adored these darling little Rustic Birdhouses made by Christina at The DIY Mommy. If you have a little bird thing going like me you can easily make these for your garden or maybe even a garden room.

Click for more from the Dollar Store Challenge and check out what else you can make with #Dollarstore deals.

Keep Makin'!!!!

With love and gratitude,

Michele

Denim Runner

Here's the denim runner I made for our bedroom dresser. I added the pocket to hold the remotes. BTW, they still get lost.
I measured the length and width of my dresser and added extra for my hairy, bohemian fringe to hang down along the sides.
I sewed on a quick and simple pocket with some added burlap and a pretty little flower.

This piece is so me. Denim and down to earth with a little girliness. It makes me happy to see it and tuck my remotes inside the pocket. We keep this at the rental condo on Okaloosa Island so it does double duty by helping to protect the furniture.

Beyond the basic sewing here is a little video that shows how to get your fray on . Don't forget to share and leave a comment.

With love and gratitude,

Michele

Dollar Store Challenge Link Party Rusty Metal Art #Starfish

Welcome to Coastal Bohemian and to the Dollar Store Challenge. It's a Link Party where my crafty blogger friends and I challenge ourselves to be creative with things that we purchase from the #Dollarstore #DollarTree

Pop on over and visit the other blogs to see what they made with a small investment.

If you love to shop for items you can use for crafts at the dollar store, then this Dollar Store Link Party is for you! Along with a group of bloggers, we're hosting a party for your dollar store craft creations. It's open for two weeks and we can't wait to see your creativity!
Meet the co-hosts of our Dollar Store Craft Link Party!

Using a $1.00 starfish piece I created this  piece of rusty metal art decor. Pop on over for the tutorial.

Rusty Metal Art #Starfish #DollarTree

Patina Patina Patina. I love Rust. I love the rusty, old, vintage look of statues and crusty metal and if you like it too you'll be able to recreate a piece of rusty metal art. Just keep reading.
I started with this starfish from the #dollartree and some junk and old jewelry and old metal odds and ends from around the studio. #destash

Using a hot glue gun I get everything attached . This is really a very free style, of puzzling things      together, meaning there is no laying out of the goodies. It's glue and go and eventually everything pretty much works it's way into the art. Trust yourself to create this way. It's very freeing.

Once everyone is stuck, I give the entire piece a coat of Gesso. This will act as a primer for my paints.
Give the entire piece a coat of brown paint . After the piece is coated, create a little batch of brown paint mixed with some sawdust .

Need sawdust you say? Home Depot and Lowes should have some laying around in their cutting area. Bring a container!

Use this textured paint to add a rusty faux finish to the metal in the artwork.

Next coat, is a drippy, bit of orange paint. Just add a few drops of water to create a free flowing version of your orange paint. We are wanting to create the look of how water would run down a piece and start to oxidize the metal. Now, you can get that paint on there using a a paint brush and then hit it with a spray of water to get it dripping down the starfish.

Repeat this process with the black paint.
Repeat the process with the verdigre aka know as aqua colored paint.

Here's the video.
And then it's complete. I think the #DollarTree has different shapes that you can choose from including a pineapple, so you can tweak this project to your own tastes.

Thanks for reading along and stop by and visit more #dollarstore craft ideas by visiting

With love and gratitude,

Michele
